The Substation Rebranding Project

night lamp

Inspired by Ukiyo (浮世, floating or fleeting in a transient world), Uki describes the pleasure seeking urban lifestyle and its ramifications.

With the rapid advancement of technology, we have become slaves to our mobile phones, to the point of affecting sleep quality. Research has shown that users who use their phones before bed time tend to have a lesser quality of sleep - Uki aims to remove this temptation.

Uki is a bedside lamp that aims to help the user rest and detach from technology - in particular, mobile phones. Designed to be as clean as possible with no ‘on’ or ‘off’ switch, the only way to turn off this lamp is to place your mobile phone on it. Once the phone is placed on top, Uki detects and starts charging the phone wirelessly, and the entire platform slowly lowers to engulf the light - symbolic of eyelids closing.

Uki is a refocused iteration of SOVA, a discursive project focusing on the intricacies of human - object relationships.
